At the time Hergé began writing Cigars of the Pharaoh in 1932, the cultural, financial and political stakes in the Middle East were high. The tomb of Tutankhamun had been discovered in 1922, revealing unprecedented treasures and archaeological riches. Adventurers of all kinds flocked to the area between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, where fames and fortunes were made and lost.
